Today, the smallmouth bass is a very popular game fish, often sought by fishermen using conventional spinning and bait equipment, as well as fly fishing equipment. In addition to wild populations, smallmouth bass is stored in fresh rivers and lakes throughout Canada and the United States. In the shallow streams it is a cautious fish, although generally not to the extent of most trout. The smallmouth bass is highly prized for its ability to fight in the high waters when it is hooked – old fishing journals refer to the smallmouth bass as “an ounce for an ounce and pound for pound the most playful fish that anything”. The smallmouth bass is taken for the table, with white meat fillets and firm when cooked. Today, many fishermen practice capture and release fisheries to improve fish stocks.
