Rainbow trout habitat and facts

Rainbow trout is native only to the rivers and lakes of north america, west of the rocky mountains, but its value as a game fish and its tasty flavor has led to its implementation around the world.

Characteristics of the arcoiris trout

1 – size and weight of the arcoíris trout

They are members of the salmon family and, like their salmon cousins, can grow quite large. They have an average of 50 cm to 76 centimeters long and weigh about 4 kilograms, but can grow up to 1 meter with 20 centimeters and weigh up to 24 kilograms.

2 – appearance of the arcoíris trout

Rainbow trout, also called red band trout, is a beautiful fish, with colorations and patterns that vary widely depending on habitat, age and spawning condition. They are torpedo shaped and are usually bluish green or yellowish green with a pinkish vein along their sides, white belly and small black spots on the back and fins.

Food of the arcoiris trout

Rainbow trout feed on insects, crustaceans and small fish. Their populations are in good health throughout the world and do not have special status or special protections. However, they are now considered a non-native pest species in some areas where they have been introduced.

Habitat and behavior of the arcoíris trout

They prefer fresh, clear rivers, streams and lakes, although some will abandon their freshwater houses and follow a river to the sea. These migratory adults, called “steel heads” because they acquire more silver marks, will spend several years in the ocean, but they must return to the current of their birth to reproduce.
